Istanbul is one of the great hookah cities of the world — the tradition goes back to Ottoman coffeehouses. But in the Old City, most visitors end up in the first café they pass near the tram line. If you want genuinely good hookah with a view worth remembering, it pays to know what to look for.
Where to go in the Old City
- Sultanahmet: Close to the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, but mostly street-level cafés with limited views.
- Grand Bazaar area: Historic courtyards and han cafés — atmospheric, but busy and without water views.
- Eminönü & Sirkeci: Near the ferries and the Spice Market; lively and convenient, mostly ground-level.
- Süleymaniye: The hilltop above the Golden Horn. Quieter, and the only area where rooftops look over the Golden Horn, Galata and the Bosphorus at once.
What makes hookah “the best”?
- Tobacco choice: Light blonde-leaf flavours for easy sessions; dark-leaf and Russian-style blends for fuller, stronger smoke.
- Heat control: No burnt taste, and staff who change coals without being asked.
- Hygiene: Disposable mouthpieces, fresh water in the base, clean hoses.
- Comfort: A session lasts 45–60 minutes — you want a comfortable seat and some shelter from the wind.
- The view: In Istanbul, this is what turns a good hookah into a memory.
When to go
Arrive about 30 minutes before sunset. By the time your hookah is ready, the sky over the Golden Horn turns orange; soon after, Galata Tower and the bridge light up. In autumn and winter, bring a light jacket for the evening breeze.
Pair your hookah with Turkish tea — it is the classic combination. Ask for strength before flavour: “light”, “medium” or “strong”.
